On May 17th, the Global PeaceTech Hub joins STG Talks at the School of Transnational Governance to discuss the dual-use of technologies, and how this provides risks and opportunities for peace. Michele Giovanardi, project associate of the Global PeaceTech Hub, and several policy leaders will give the latest insights in this developing field.
Recent advancements in science and technology have amplified the opportunities for local and international socioeconomic development. However, they have also increased the risks and threats to peace and security. Individual States, and the international community as a whole, need to advance the development of governance mechanisms for dual-use technologies (that is, technologies that can be used for peaceful and harmful purposes) to curb the threats derived from them while also stimulating their potential for good. This STG Talk will present how new developments of dual-use technologies in the digital, life sciences and aerospace fields impact prospects for peace, security and development and how they can be tempered through appropriate governance regimes.
