Artificial Intelligence brought many technical, legal, and ethical questions that exceed the scope of existing ICT ethics frameworks. Algorithms are a new type of tool that differs in many ways from ICT devices and other hardware as well as from systems traditionally used for the collection, processing, analysis, and dissemination of information. In addition to that, some of AI applications come with unintentional harms or unintended consequences approaches that intend to sustain peace and prevent conflict but also cause harms and exacerbate conflict and violence. Raising awareness about these risks, applying tools to mitigate them and transfer ethical principles into the practice of AI-based projects is a necessary first step of designing and applying ethical AI-based peacebuilding work.
This workshop will explore the possibility of creating a more central ethics resource for peacebuilding practitioners working with AI-based technologies. AI for Peace will present insight from their research and interviews conducted with practitioners and based on those engage workshop participants in co-creating a sort of a Primer or a Guide for Ethical AI in Peacebuilding field.
The objective is to learn from experiences of workshop participants, and jointly explore best practices and opportunities for ensuring the design and implementation of Ethical AI in Peacebuilding. The workshop is open to all in-person participants of the Global Peace Tech Conference 2022, experts and representatives from different Peace Tech Labs, research institutes, non-profit organizations, governments, and companies.
